This is the best adaptation of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. It may not feature Victor or the Creature, but no other movie captures the agony, the rage, the sheer fucking loneliness of someone who just wants to be felt, to be seen. May Canady is such a heart-rending portrayal of the other, longing for companionship from outside the dark, reaching out only to be rejected and cast out. I love this film to pieces, and I hope for a world where the outsider never has to be alone.

A story we tell over and over again. Ancient evil, opulent and imperial, wakes from its slumber to consume all without. An abyss that lurks in all hearts, no matter how much men may try to deny, suppress, appease it. We are not so rational, we are not so clean. Only one can end the curse. She knows what must be done. She invites the monster in, freely and of her own will. The abyss gazes into her, and she gazes back. Love is all that is needed. Beauty and Beast rest in peace.

Here's a first for me, I am at a loss as to how to qualify this film. I can see why The Batman is compared to it, as it really does not take much work to imagine it as a GCPD story set before Bruce begins his Batmaning. Both the city and the movie itself are just drenched in a heavy rain of 90s grunge and urban decay, each scene is infused with this muted and resigned despair. Morgan Freeman…

The best thing I can say is that Freaky wasn't as bad as I expected, and that is owed entirely to Kathryn Newton. She's awesome as the killer experiencing gender euphoria, and not nearly enough of the movie was dedicated to her chainsawing shitty teen boys. Instead most of it is taken up by Vince Vaughn pretending to be a teen girl because apparently that's funny, a stereotypical gay best friend who introduces himself with a rapey joke, an Aztec…

Had to rewatch this after a conversation today, and man I forgot how well done this is. Despite what are really only a few nitpicks I have regarding the plot (chickening out on making Thomas Wayne a complete bastard and Riddler's m.o. change from targeting the rich and powerful to regular people and minorities), The Batman succeeds both as a narrative and an adaptation because it understands that beneath the image of a terrifying, gothic creature of the night is a compassionate little kid who wants to change the world so no one has to suffer like he did.

Bourgeois sensibility and decadence masque a simmering rage against exploitative expectation, a radical dance of feminine camaraderie. Or, to put it simply, The Last Dinner Party *slays*.
