    Gladiator II

    ★★½

Feels like all the same source material as the original, while missing everything vital to its success. It’s a tale as old as time to see sequels flop, but this does so somewhat worse. Trying to resurrect characters from a 20+ year old film all to continue a storyline that was so well self-contained. You cannot watch it without feeling how forced it all is. Denzel stands out per usual but no other A-listers brought anything memorable to the table. I would love to kind of forget about it and once again consider Gladiator a stand alone film…

Can’t believe I hadn’t seen this before. Michael Keaton goes hard for this role. Tim Burton had some killer set designs, I know it’s not for everyone, but goodness it’s entertaining!

Just rewatched for the first time in years. Hold up as one of the best action movies I’ve ever seen. Just enough substance/dialogue to allow it to play to its strengths. What a lovely day…

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3

Man I’d hate to be chained to the MCU storyline while trying to direct a solid trilogy. James Gunn struggles to find meaning for almost any characters in GOTG 3. We see Star Lord become a side character and unresolved relations between multiple characters. The whole Rocket story just felt like a shallow reach for empathy in a character we are supposed to start seeing as the main protagonist. Might be time to put this franchise on the shelf.
