Incredibly overbearing and manipulative; the filmmakers consciously chose to gloss over the subjects' guilt and to refrain from showing anything more than the most cursory inkling of remorse for their actions. I do feel for the children, they are the real victims here, but I feel hardly any sympathy for the mother and father. This isn't because I'm some heartless, neoconservative, advocate of authoritarian law-and-order policies, but because the film doesn't effectively humanize its central characters.
