Conclave 2024
A very stylish film with brilliant actors and a tight, well-directed political chamber drama. There's really not much more to it, and that's perfectly fine. (What we really want, is a spinoff where Cardinal Lawrence and Sister Agnes leave the Vatican together to fight crime and corruption in the Catholic Church!)

Dave Eggers has previously demonstrated his mastery of the craft and his ability to take dark stories seriously, without undercutting them with irony or winks to a modern audience. The Northman didn’t resonate with me, and I wondered if it might be a sign that he was heading towards overwrought and humorless. However, this lavishly gothic film reassured me. It’s a truly splendid reimagining of the German classic from 1922, with many scenes lifted almost directly from the original.
