A very stylish film with brilliant actors and a tight, well-directed political chamber drama. There's really not much more to it, and that's perfectly fine. (What we really want, is a spinoff where Cardinal Lawrence and Sister Agnes leave the Vatican together to fight crime and corruption in the Catholic Church!)
Bong Joon Ho achieved well-deserved worldwide success with the fantastic "Parasite", which tells the story of resourceful small-time swindlers exploiting every opportunity in their impoverished surroundings. This dystopian sci-fi film is also about people on the underbelly of society; Mickey (played by as-always skillful Robert Pattinson) is a poor, unlucky, quite pathetic character who is largely resigned to the fact that his life is grim and brutal and that he has no autonomy. The third film in Dag Johan Haugerud's trilogy is not as flashy as "Dreams" (which I might still consider the best), and it doesn’t have the obvious drama that "Sex" does, but it is a really good film. Throughout, I found myself thinking about Plato's different versions of love: "Dreams" is clearly about (dramatic and intense) infatuation, while I think "Sex" largely deals with relationships, and this final film is really about *caring*. Dave Eggers has previously demonstrated his mastery of the craft and his ability to take dark stories seriously, without undercutting them with irony or winks to a modern audience. The Northman didn’t resonate with me, and I wondered if it might be a sign that he was heading towards overwrought and humorless. However, this lavishly gothic film reassured me. It’s a truly splendid reimagining of the German classic from 1922, with many scenes lifted almost directly from the original.
