The Substance 2024
Entertaining but undercooked. It seems reviewers are focused more on the shock factor and "body horror" rather than the film as a whole (slightly ironic, no?). I suppose it's a clear indication that audiences are more hungry for unconventional concepts and thin plots than they are for articulate and tightly crafted storytelling at the moment.
It could work better as a one-hour Black Mirror-style episode but the film has great performances and cinematography. That said, the effects department deserves an award.
Congratulations to Coralie Fargeat for successfully delivering this over-the-top film to theaters.

I wanted to love this movie, which I may have been able to do if it was half as long or if it was about an entirely different set of characters. Convoluted is something of an understatement.
It's as if someone searched the globe for the most wealthy, unappreciative people and made a two hour reality show about them, as they lived out their last moments in some sort of self-constructed fantasy world, in an attempt to cope with the inevitable. Gross. Just a little bit.
Although, I really liked the wonderfully shot intro sequence.
