    It's a Free World...

    ★★★★

Ken Loach's films have always been centered on working class characters. It's A Free World..., focusing on the exploitation of immigrant workers in the UK, is no different.

Loach, however, chooses to tell this story from an unexpected perspective. Angie, the protagonist - an ambitious woman in her 30s - is not an immigrant worker; rather, she is the one who is exploiting them. This choice of protagonist is significant.

In films (or in any other kind of storytelling), it…

The greatest tragedy of my life - if you can call it that - was when I fell from a scooter and broke my ankle about a year ago. I couldn't walk for the next three months. I had just moved into a new place a week before, and had a lot of plans on what to do next. I realized all of that had to be scratched.

One of the first things I remember thinking was, okay, this has…

This is the first film ever I've watched twice on a big screen. Kinda shocking that it took me over 30 years to do that.

Conclave is a good film to watch on a big screen. It serves as an anthropological account of a process – the election of a new pope – that has had a substantial role in the course we have taken as a civilization over the past millennium and more. The event and the rituals surrounding…

Some airlines provide their customers with pillows during flights, they also usually provide paper bags into which one could puke if the necessity arrived. Cinema halls in India would do well to learn a trick or two from these airlines.

Where do I start? Bhaag Milkha Bhaag is disgusting. Kirby Dick's film, This Film Is Not Yet Rated is about how whimsical and ridiculous the MPAA is. The Indian Censor Board…

My film is cliched, bad... and has a revolting screenplay.

This is a quote from the film about Sen's first film. However, it describes Srijit Mukherji's Padatik more than anything Mrinal Sen has ever made.

This movie can only be described as a hate crime against cinephiles. So hopelessly pretentious that it makes me feel physically sick.

Srijit's style of filmmaking is like taking a fistful of food and shoving it straight down your throat until it reaches your stomach.…
