Black Narcissus 1947
Finding it impossible to rate this movie bc on one hand it has so much breathtaking art direction and cinematography: the painted mountain backdrop, the beautifully elaborate outfits worn by the young general (that one leopard coat!!!), the silky smooth textures of billowing cloth, the constantly setting pink sun illuminating everything - stunning.
But also this movie is really racist, it casts white actors in brownface, and is way too muddled and ill-intentioned in its depiction of the village natives…
