Cape Fear 1991
Oddly similar to Dead calm (1989) which I watched the night before- indulgent rape scenes, physical struggle on a boat, bad guy threatening the family. But Dead calm was more reflective and vibey, whereas cape fear was so straightwardly action it was more boring to me- not a single shot that didn’t contain action, no sense of place, no vibiness… Theyre both bro-y thrillers but sometimes one needs that.

All the Vermeers in New York 1990
classic tale of two people using each other in New York. I loved it. every shot is so formally composed and theres that familiar subtle brutally ironic humor that’s always right beneath the surface. very Rohmer but more visual and less conversational. the ending was a little silly but i forgive it bc the part where the Stock Broker guy hands Anna a wad of cash is just so sad and weird. i miss the late 80s even though i never knew them.
