I had to sit with this one a while before reviewing it. It’s so well-observed I got little shivers of recognition throughout. I want to believe the parents saying “everything turns out ok,” but life isn’t a romantic comedy and Nancy Savoca knows it.

Book of Days 1989
Ooh, I kind of loved this. I'm no expert, but I don't think too many movies/albums/art projects merge whimsy and tragedy with this much success. And I could watch that "grand finale" all day!

The Fly 1986
I was right: this was extra disgusting! Something about the human scale or the ooziness. I'll take exploding heads any day over whatever was happening to Goldblum's skin here, haha.
But of course this was really good. All the gross-out makeup was secondary to Goldblum's terrific physical performance. I've never been so moved by a mad scientist's downfall.
My October list.
