It's not really a film, not really a musical. It is not really about the political issues plaguing Mexico, not really about crime and not really about the trans experience. While some might see this film as an example of failure to do too many things at once, to me this makes the film its own stand-alone genre that takes all of these topics and weaves them together into a sparkly, musical and emotional extravaganza. I cannot say if its a good movie, but I can say that I bought into its rules and experienced something emotional and entirely new.
