Polytechnique 2009
A raw and masterful depiction of hatred and violence. It’s both effective and striking with a few bits and bobs: Villeneuve proves that he doesn’t need a massive budget to create great cinema.

Incendies 2010
A powerful allegory of dilemma between oblivion and awareness, Incendies questions the place of past’s violence and death in our lives. Wajdi Mouawad’s wonderful text, that is paradoxically both contrite and irascible, is enhanced by Villeneuve’s gaze and talent who succeeds to make us completely shattered. So far, Incendies is his best picture.

Do the Right Thing 1989
Do the Right Thing is profoundly touching and funny during its first three quarters, but we feel a tangible violence that keeps growing in the background. Then, it suddenly gives us one of the most tragic end I’ve ever seen in cinema. We’ve tried our best to be ready for this burst of uncontrollable and human ferocity, but we aren’t. It doesn’t give us proper solution and we feel completely helpless after the viewing - this effect is so powerful that an effort must be made to remember what we felt before the inevitable happened. A complete masterpiece!
