    Do the Right Thing

    ★★★★★

A comprehensive expression on cultural divide explored to perfection with stylistic shots and an animated cast.

'Do the Right Thing' is set on the hottest day of Summer in one block on the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighbourhood of Brooklyn. The panning zooms and winding camera shots, alongside a repeated use of low, high, and dutch angles formulates a vibrant and lively street, whilst warm yellows, reds, and ambers emphasise the blistering conditions of the day, establishing from the start an environment that…

    Completely astonishing, ground-breaking cinema.

'Singin' in the Rain' is a culmination of film as a medium. It completely transcended what was possible, both visually and audibly. The cinematography is simply remarkable. It's vibrant, coruscating, and utterly magical to witness. The "Broadway Melody" is a visual feast, illustrating a glorious dreamworld that completely took me aback.

The music sequences are astonishingly jovial and are brought to life thanks to Gene Kelly, Donald O'Connor, and Debbie Reynolds’s slick and fluid choreography. Even…

Thought it meandered on at times — like it could have been a 90 or even 80 minute film — but nonetheless I enjoyed it for what it is, even if I struggled to stay awake after a long shift at work.

Also, I absolutely ADORE the soundtrack!!

    Pride & Prejudice

    ★★★★½

'Pride & Prejudice' is an ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS film that utilises its visual techniques magnificently.

The natural lighting of the film effectively captivates the audience by emphasising both the comedic toned scenes and the dramatic scenes. The rejection sequence in the rain is literal perfection; the acting, the close-ups, the dim lighting, the pauses in between each others statements — it is beyond compelling. It is incredible how each scene is shot so purposefully to convey the strong emotions they are emitting.…

    Django Unchained

    ★★★★½

Tarantino's most compelling plot yet, intertwined with his defining movie traits.

'Django Unchained' may not be the most realistic depiction of slavery, but it certainly (in a hyperbolic way) respects the horrific events that occurred. It has the traditional characteristics of a Tarantino film; the violence, the profanity, the humour, and the witty dialogue, but I also loved the development of the characters this time around, especially with Dr Schultz who battles his guilt and Django who challenges the oppressive…

    Face/Off

    ★★★

I don't really understand how this has ascended into 'cult classic' status, but I still enjoyed the overall concept and specific scenes of the film.

It's a film that doesn't take itself too seriously (thankfully), and from that we receive some genuinely insane performances from John Travolta and Nicholas Cage. The over-acting is absolutely hilarious to watch even if I didn't care about most of the classic John Woo action scenes with the outrageous slo-mos and camera angles.

    'Face/Off' is…
