If I'd done my homework and knew this was a movie that glorifies Yukio Mishima's nationalist ideology, I would've skipped this. I would've missed out on some very gorgeous visuals, and an excellent score, but at least I wouldn't be here feeling mad at the movie and at all of the folks who are praising the screenplay to high heavens.

As someone who was in the same situation as Alejandro, my brain was constantly going "yes! The US immigration is terrible maze of bizarre oppressive and sometimes contradictory rules! But not in this specific way! This part is not actually accurate!" 😅
I really liked this movie but I do wish there was a movie that accurately portrayed how messed up it actually is… the real thing is so so much worse than what y'all see here.

I liked it on my first watch and I think I appreciated it even more on my second!
I love all the nods to Indian soap operas (yes, those dramatic transitions and sound effects were on purpose, and Nida Manzoor isn't just someone who just discovered iMovie — she knows exactly what she's doing), the over the top absurd action sequences, how that Maar Daala dance perfectly combined Devdas' version with hints of martial arts, and Priya Kansara, Nimra Bucha, and Ritu Arya were perfectly cast.
More people need to see this movie.

I mean… the cinematography was gorgeous, there was a some atmospheric horror stuff in the first half, but I keep waiting for Eggers to make a movie that I like as much as I liked The Witch, and he seems to be moving further away from that kinda movie. This felt like just another Dracula adaptation that didn't really have anything new to say, or give me anything to think about after the movie was over.
Also, did we really need jump scares? I'm annoyed by them in general but they feel very out of place in this.
