Exactly the film I wanted Challengers to be. Grubby, compromising, ambiguous, sordid. Gay propaganda in the best way; warm and vital in all the ways that Hollywood has become bloodless and sanitary. At its most robust when not taken neither literally nor too seriously; the way back to art is, of course, as it has always been, through fucking and murder.

The Umbrellas of Cherbourg 1964
I saw this at 1pm on a wet Tuesday at the PCC. I don't know what I was expecting but I came out sobbing. For a film that is so inherently about the messiness of being human there is something almost geometric about it, a real precision to its languor. Nino Castelnuevo was so beautiful.

Mononoke the Movie: The Phantom in the Rain 2024
Way more than an exercise in pure style; this is seriously trying the boundaries of symbolism and gestural storytelling. It mostly works.
