I haven’t watched this since I was a burgeoning cinephile in high school and yet I’ve seen it a hundred times in all the references, the jokes, the excerpts, the homages, the spiels about the profoundly wonderful storytelling. A shining beacon of the best of cinema- great interesting faces telling really specific stories in a beautiful setting with a clear visual story and tone.

Sitting down for this random free early screening at an AMC way out in the suburbs, I conceded that it might just be a fun night at the movies. & the first twenty minutes were fun! There’s fun music, pretty costumes, beautiful landscapes. I’m easy to please like that: put actors I like in interesting settings and I’ll watch them do whatever.
