The ending left a strong impression on me. None of his issues were really resolved by the end of the movie. His sister leaving for college, friendships fading, his father’s absence, and his grandmother's physical health rapidly deteriorating, all of these problems leave him to simply cope with the situation. The only present figure in his life is his mother, which is seen by the end of the movie, as she gazes at him across the table with pure love in her eyes. As the movie ends with a shot of Chris’s face, it also marks the absence of the immature boy he was.

Whiplash 2014

What a fantastic, ambiguous conclusion to a movie that was both uncomfortable and entertaining. There are so many questions left unanswered, which leaves you in a state of confusion. Is Andrew truly content with the affirmation he received from Fletcher or will he strive for more unfulfilling attention from his sociopathic instructor? The fact is, Fletcher was in a win-win scenario. He either humiliated Andrew in front of an audience, or crafted a musical legend, which is exactly what he always intended. Fletcher was aware that he had a hold over Andrew, and he knew exactly how to use it to his advantage.
