This gets an extra half star for being one of the first films of 1998 that got people interested in anything besides Titanic. I worked in a theater at the time and couldn't wait for the Titanic reign to end. I still have a visceral reaction when I hear that fucking Céline Dion song. It sucked to have to tell people every single day for months on end that it was sold out again. Parents made kids cry in front…

Hugo 2011
The Invention of Hugo Cabret is one of my favorite, favorite books. Its illustrations (done in pencil) are remarkable, and bring out the story in a visual storyboard format. When I heard Scorsese was in charge of the adaptation, I figured it would be a slam dunk for him. Turns out I was right. It's excellent. The cast is terrific, it's well paced (if maybe a touch on the long side, for a film aimed at kids), and I could see people of most ages finding something to enjoy here.
