I was fortunate enough to watch this with a theater full of various Asians and generations. I enjoyed having shared visceral reactions, and even the smaller gasps and chuckles really spoke to how universal Sean Wang’s film is and how each of us resonated with the characters in this story.
Dìdi is nostalgic in the way we’re made to reflect on our first rebellions, methods of escapism, familial bonds, friendships, and, of course, landmark cringeworthy moments. There are many.
One of the log lines proclaims it’s “For anyone who’s ever been a teenager,” and there’s no truer statement.

My new favorite Marvel (sorry, Infinity War and Black Panther).
Expect a ton of fan service, gawk at the technical shots, then appreciate the cinematography in the quiet moments.
I really thought it would be just another Deadpool movie, and there’s a fair amount of fourth wall self awareness, but the story is finely woven.
And, well, it’s one for multiple rewatches.
Might be one of the best politically-themed anime movies out there. It’s definitely one of the standouts of Ghost In the Shell era animation.
