  Imagine being directed by your own father in an incest subplot that eats up over 20% of the movie whilst giving one of the most comically bad performances ever.
  Laughed out loud during the scene in the Vatican courtyard where he asks for "orange juice and candy", the same person he asks returns literally 6 seconds later with a tray of orange juice and biscuits out of nowhere.

  While I firmly believe M. Night was yet to reach his directorial heights (that'd come next), the sensitivity in this script is remarkable and it shows proudly in the performances. It's the highly emotionally satisfying payoffs that elevate this film, particularly when Cole opens up to his mother during the car accident scene, the funeral concession sequence is also a knockout. Somewhat ironically, it's the horror elements that come across the most dated here, I much prefer to see this as a psychological drama, wherein lies its greatest strengths.
