It’s rare these days to see something that just blows me away, but this film is the real deal.
Incredibly well written, acted and directed. I was completely immersed in the story. This is a prime example of how two things can be true — you can be happy to see good people being good to each other, and sad for what they have lost.
I hadn't seen this since I was a kid, and this movie is *very* 80's. It's a bit "adult" for a kids movie: there is a body count, some of the Gremlin deaths are pretty gross, and then there is the scene where Phoebe Cate's character explains what happened to her dad.
But it brought back a bunch of nostalgia for me, and I'll probably re-watch Gremlins 2 sometime soon.
Typically, a boxing movie ends on some climactic match, but this isn't your typical boxing movie. The main match happens halfway through, and the film gets much more interesting with what happens after that match.
Incredibly well acted (Brian Tyree Henry, in particular, crushed it). And the script, from Barry Jenkins, is superb.
