Very compelling visuals and atmosphere. I have no idea what this movie is about though.
Amidst the turmoil of 16th century clan warfare, a lowly thief is chosen to be a lord's double, and eventually take his place when the lord dies. The film brings up questions of identity--being a double is repeatedly referred to as a "torture", since it requires one to be someone they are not--and deals with the messy ethics of leading a false life (in particular, the kagemusha's relationship with the young heir to the throne).

I was bopping NON STOP through this movie in my seat and I felt like a crazy person.
But, then I looked up and saw David Byrne writhing on the ground and…ironically, everything made sense.
So naturally I got up and began to dance during the band’s frenetic performance of “Crosseyed and Painless.” I was the only one even remotely moving in that theater—doing all sorts of atrocious dance moves, shaking like I was in a seizure—and yet I somehow didn’t care at all.
