the intro absolutely floored me. a lot of elements here that were brilliant - the score, the shot of the train exploding, the sex scenes (idk how much was cut in the print i saw in the theater, but they still worked really well), the performances, the cinematography. it's a shame it wasn't all tied together as well as it could have been. i even liked the irony in the "it's about the destination, not the journey" line in the…

this was only my second Kaurismaki after Fallen Leaves but i feel like I’m already in love with the director
his characters are beautiful and flawed and perfectly aware of the fact that they’re flawed. the films are perfectly aware that the world around them is flawed but still maintain that they deserve something good. i loved the note on which it ends and the ship with the hammer and sickle.
