Not even Christopher Lee and Barbara Shelly can make this movie work.

Dunkirk 2017
Powerful. Claustrophobic. Rallying.
There are not enough superlatives to use when talking about this film. I'm sure a lot of people will key in on the treatment of water or the sound, the layering of time is the element that impressed me and elevated this from a standard post-Saving Private Ryan war movie into something gripping. By collapsing time and showing us the same scenes from differing viewpoints, Nolan gives us a glimpse of the evacuation at Dunkirk. The film is relentless. It comes in from all sides. It is powerful and full of dread.

Phantom Thread 2017
Do not let the trailers fool you, this is no dour period piece. Someone on the Dissolve! group called it a "funny, fucked up rom-com" and that might be the best description of this film, which focuses on the exertion of wills in a relationship. It's beautiful to look at and a treat to watch. PTA leaves no expression, no small movement unexamined and DDL is so crisp and precise that he is a marvel to watch. If this really is his last film, he's going out on top.
