I was expecting this to be more flat but boy was I wrong!! She’s a real character with pathos and shit! The photography looks so good and the characters have texture. And best of all, they don’t over explain it!!!!

Santa sangre vibes! Surreal and cartoonish with a good bit of nastiness.
The main thing holding it back for me was the lack of heart. Hard to invest when the protag is a heroic piece of cardboard.

The city photography has no right looking this good!! Every moment of the Riffs on screen looks so good, too.
There’s something so childlike about the world, it’s like a pre-teen’s idea of gangs. I also like how little explanatory dialogue there is!
I think the musical album is such a wildly successful modernization of this story. It gives a much more sympathetic and grounded emotional hook, but is just as quirked up as the movie.
The comic book transitions on the directors cut are so distracting 😭

The performances, especially Caligari, remind me of clowning/mime, which I love so much. The trailer for the 2005 version looks really bad but I do want to see Doug Jones’ Cesare.
