A Face in the Crowd 1957
the film is so straightforward—almost pushing on parable—that some of the on-screen tension can feel one-dimensional or over-simplified.
that isn’t to say ‘a face in the crowd’ isn’t beautifully directed or profound at moments, but it makes sense that the basis for the film was a short story, as the film-length version of this story really only succeeds on the strength of patricia neal, whose face perfectly registers the shift from glee to disgust when she comes to terms with the monstrous nature of the man she loved.
