A clockwork crime drama/thriller. Even today, HEAT’s action scenes get brought up as among the best in the genre, and for good reason. The sound design in this film’s shootouts is immaculate— every gunshot sounds weighty, destructive, and potentially lethal. This is maybe one of the best-paced movies I’ve ever watched. Classic, pretty straightforward take on the Akutagawa story, with a great freak performance from Toshiro Mifune. Interesting bookends with the priest/thief/woodcutter serving as a kind of chorus for the whole plot’s affairs, as well as bookending the film’s themes of ambiguity and our ability to trust one another. Underrated bit of physical comedy where the bandit describes his fight with the samurai as an epic clash between masterful swordsmen and then the woodcutter depicts it as abject flailing that more resembles a playground slapfight than anything else.
