All the ingredients are here for a new absurdist sci-fi classic, but it’s a bit over-cooked and not wholly satisfying (though def worth seeing). Completely loved Robert Pattinson’s witty lead performance—he’s adorable (and weirdly sexy); did not love Mark Ruffalo, who was acting in a different movie than everyone else.

Hugh Grant was just biding his time all these many decades, to prove once and for all that he could very successfully play a flat-out evil, menacing villain in a horror film without even breaking a sweat. Good show, old chap! I really like Hugh Grant.

I don't know if it's the best film ever made (it just topped the famous Sight and Sound critics poll), but it's goddamned good. Any movie that can make a scene where the heroine has overcooked and ruined the potatoes genuinely stressful for the viewer as well has to be doing something right. I was entranced by its metronomic structure and steadily rising psychological tension.

Really good little indie that was waaay ahead of its time—I agree with those who say Claudia Weill was a sort of godmother to Lena Dunham and other female filmmakers. Girlfriends is a smart and naturalistic slice of life, refreshingly free of earnestness or any Lessons Learned sort of nonsense. The characters are realistically flawed and relatable. It's also fun to see baby versions of Melanie Mayron, Christopher Guest and Bob Balaban up on the screen. The movie has held up very well with the passage of time, B+
