  the lightness and youthful folly amongst the backdrop pastels of hong kong which carries through the film stands in stark contrast to the jarring and unsettling subject matter of this film. i’m not sure how a film can manage to be so nihilistic and depressing while almost entirely avoiding overtly dark aesthetics, but apparently it can be done. there are moments of almost-hope and uplift. beautiful and emotionally devastating, this is what it looks like to have no future.
