This is an amazing normal bob performance from De Niro that is scary because its not threatening in the same way he would play it in any other scorsese collab. Pupkin can be any of us feeling ourselves well meaning enough in our delusions. Also love that Scorseses cameo is him laughing at the idea of the writers being killed by the studios firing squad…

Watching this so many years later, it reminds me how deeply it embedded in my creative output and writing like July all throughout college. Theres still some immensely touching material in this, i still get worked up at the match cut from the moon to the compact light in the darkly lit shoe department. Its funny how this movie functioned for me as an adolescent as a pragmatic guide for managing the difficult to navigate budding feelings around intimacy and now as an adult the same material plays as stomach churning horror lmao. What a difference 15 years makes.
