I really don’t think I was the target demographic for this film. I’m not a huge fan of the 80’s slasher movies or the 80’s aesthetic in general and this film oozed 80’s. Mia Goth is unhinged and great but this felt like her weakest performance of the trilogy. I realized after watching that I conflated her character in Pearl with the character of Maxine and that maybe skewed my viewing experience but I also didn’t really enjoy anything enough…

Yikes. The resurgence of M. Night Shyamalan has been nice to see but this movie is a stark reminder of why we are indeed calling this a comeback. I avoided this movie when it first came out, having had enough of M. Night’s moral grandstanding. Only now am I finding out that this movie was apparently directed by one John Erick Dowdle, the screenplay was by Brian Nelson, and Shyamalan was just the one that wrote the story? What a…
