Oh no.
Honestly, fuck a rating.
This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.
Had my wisdom teeth out yesterday and wanted to watch something familiar.
This still has an all timer of an ending imo. Truman taking a bow before just stepping through the exit door into the abyss is great.
First time watching this after transitioning, and it still bangs. I really love Dunye's documentary-esque style, some 90s queer cinéma vérité from the perspective of a black lesbian. "Sometimes you have to create your own history" is a hell of a quote to end the movie with.
Also, I love how much of a 90s ass indie movie this is, people working in video stores, and The Center for Lesbian Info Technology, some good shit imo.
Lesbians stay winning.
A fucking wild thriller. Fandom and idol culture are rancid, but that's not really an original concept to explore in filmmaking. Contains a lot of Really Not Great genre tropes that might be hard to get past.
My first Satoshi Kon film, though I've seen a handful of Paranoia Agent episodes before.
Also as a general note, I hate giving things a numerical value as part of a critique or just talking through my feelings on a film, it feels reductive…
