Movie go brr
est. November 2023
4K. IMAX. CINEMA.
One of the greatest animated works ever, and somehow I haven’t seen it in theaters before. All Miyazaki films should be experienced this way at least once in one’s life. The visuals painted so gorgeously on the big screen and the legendary soundtrack blasting in the theater felt like I was floating. Of course, the English dub is so uniquely good in all Ghibli films and it felt so nostalgic but also cinematic. The story holds up…
Killer screenplay, killer cast.
We really don’t get adult dramas like this anymore. Still going through Mann’s filmography but I’m pretty sure this is his best script. It was definitely a lot longer than it should’ve been, but Al Pacino was on point and Christopher Plummer was utterly captivating.
4.5/5
Very heartfelt story about unconditional love for your parents no matter how they are as people.
Payne does a great job balancing dark humor and familial love while being a cold, B&W film in the Rural Nebraska winter. I’m surprised Bob Odenkirk has such a small part and wasn’t even the highlight, whereas June Squibb was hilarious and was really the standout for me. The film was quite slow and the performances were pretty uneven, but it was still enjoyable. Both this and Sideways were solid, but don’t really come close to The Holdovers for me.
3/5
Decent dark comedy with a stacked cast.
Smart dialogue and amazing PSH performance as usual, but I felt a little let down by the story and thought they could’ve done more with this cast and setting. Also felt uneasy about the whole Alec Baldwin fiasco in the film, for obvious reasons.
