Several nice scenes and an excellent sense of place.  Mostly dull and extremely repetitive.

    ★★★

“Rebel” earns three stars on the basis of a crackling first hour.  Realistic situations, sparkling dialogue, complex characters, and succinct story telling.   The hero and the villain both behave intelligently and their chess game is invigorating. It appears that this will not be your typical “evil Southern sheriff” film.  The second hour, however, settles into Jack Reacher/CBS drama territory.  It is bloated, needlessly complex and the big final confrontation is poorly staged.   Don Johnson is excellent and the “thank you for your service” line is delightful.  Starts out “Hell or High Water” and ends up “MacGyver.”

Malkovich creates a good character and the cast is solid but there is not enough originality or substance here for a 90 minute film.
