I'm generally not a fan of war films. I find the vast majority to be uninspired and derivative, as well as entirely disconnected from any sort of nuanced emotion. Somehow, after this multi-hour visceral assault ended, in the recesses of my mind I felt comforted after watching The Substance. It was a comfort buried under the crushing intensity of all the other emotions the film laid upon me.
