I’m conflicted on this one.
Technically, it’s brilliant, and everyone involved acting wise knocked it out of the park.
I understand that it wasn’t trying to be subtle, but this film is so heavy handed that it gets frustrating at points. I also am just not sure if body horror is my thing, because there were points in this where I needed to look away.
I’m glad it got some love at the Oscar’s, and I recommend a watch but I prob won’t be watching this one again anytime soon.
I really enjoyed Furiosa, and the huge expansion to the lore that it brought, but you’re deadass wrong if you think the special effects or action hold a candle to this one.
I was curious to rewatch this after Furiosa, as I had seen a lot of discourse about the similarities and difference between the two films. While still having goofy characters and names, this one takes itself so much more seriously which I think really benefits the film overall.…
Goddamn, this movie was so well done. While branded as a romance, I felt that this was much more a film about change and acceptance than a traditional romance film. There was very little dramatization or direct conflict, but instead Past Lives is a very subtle story about what could have been, and how different people accept that it never can be. While I was locked in the whole time, the last 10 minutes sealed it together absolutely perfectly.
