Hard to even know where to start with this! Such a specific mood, filled to the brim with characters straining for significance, straining to make something of their lives, to attach some greater meaning to the war between Mangoshake Stand and Noodle Stand. Captures suburban ennui gloriously well - I could have watched these characters wander around an abandoned, eerie world of endless houses and empty fields for hours.

Thrillingly amateur, a term I use with affection. Very funny. Occasionally…

Watched with JBB on Shudder's The Last Drive-In. Hadn't seen this one in years, barely even remembered it, but damn if it doesn't stand shoulder to shoulder with the rest of Romero's original Dead trilogy. It's 2am as I write this and there's so much I could say about the way this film excavates what it means to be human - it's basically the Blade Runner 2049 of zombie movies - but it's late and I'm tired, so I guess I'll just have to rewatch it sometime in the very near future.

Quite bad! One of those thrillers that's ashamed of being a thriller. This one attempts to dress up its killings in faux-profundity, with the vast majority of the runtime being given over to mathematical ramblings that alternate between incoherent and insipid. The murder mystery, such as it is, ends up being about as perfunctory and underwhelming as you'd expect as a result. The only really interesting note is that everyone - possibly up to and including John Hurt - wants to fuck Elijah Wood.

Tell me about Mel Gibson's dick and balls!

There is a certain irony in a movie like Cecil B. Demented praising outsider art while bearing the sheen of middlebrow television. A version of this made twenty or thirty years earlier might not have taken quite so many digs at remakes and sequels, but would have possessed a younger John Waters' scrappier iconoclasm. Still, there's a lot to like. As per usual, Waters is firmly on the side of the sickos,…

As someone who was once a grad student in an English program, and has been teaching college students in one way or another for almost a decade, there was a lot that was familiar about this miniseries. Certainly, I "recognized" many of the professors and students. Ultimately just didn't work for me though, and I blame it all on Jay Duplass. His character - a white, middle-aged, charismatic male professor who is also a total mess - was frustrating from…
