This is such a beautifully shot anti war film, depicting the trauma of ordinary people caught in the destructive forces of war. The black and white cinematography here is a standout as is the fine acting in particular of the lead actress Tatiana Samoilova who grounds and engages in every scene with her beautifully expressive eyes - it's a wonder she never became a star internationally.
