  This comedic tragedy was slower and quieter than I had expected but still wildly engaging and sprawlingly ambitious. It reminded me of The Rules of the Game, but instead of a French aristocrat's summer mansion, the setting here is a dump. A bold choice for Kurosawa's first film in color, grappling with the social conservatism of Japan, the power dynamics of age and gender, trauma, life and death, poverty, desires and delusional thinking.
