Three steps away from being great, but ultimately left me with a very bad taste in my mouth. The subtlety of the first half fades away in the second as the story ultimately becomes contrived and cartoonish. I’m not sure how you could walk away from this film and see it as anything other than an unfinished building where the sketches are more beautiful than its final form.
Clean and simple and dumb. Mel deserves better, as do the actors. I’d be surprised if this movie took longer than a week to film. I would love to see the shooting schedule.
After the last Jay and Silent Bob movie I should have known to steer clear. Kevin Smith was never the greatest filmmaker, but this feels like a student film. The writing is so bad. Too many montages. Family guy-style random stuff that isn’t funny. The tone goes from the dumbest thing you’ve ever seen to tear jerking hospital tragedy and back within the same scene. Was there even a single note given by anyone? Total dumpster fire.
I feel bad coming for Marty, but this is a deeply boring film. I genuinely don't understand what people like about it. I don't care about the de-aging (which is bad) or the length (which is too long) I just care that the movie is extremely boring and the characters are flat. I don't even think it's just an editing problem. I honestly don't see how you would ever get a good film out of exploring a character with no human emotions or interesting thoughts. This is like if the robots in The Matrix tried to generate a Scorsese movie. It sucked.
