She ate.
It's interesting how the first half of the film is just teaching the audience what animation is and how it's done.
The animation may be rudimentary but it does a very good job at establishing Gertie's personality.
Great exercise in building tension. It's like an evolved version of The Lonely Villa. It's filled with creative filmmaking decisions, like the shot of the car's side view mirror to show the police approaching.
And that split screen scene was gorgeous. Using the lamp in the man's office to create a triangle and then use that to divide the screen in three parts might sound simple but it's the first time I've seen a film of this era do something like this.
There are two versions of this film, one where there's cross-cutting between the scene inside the burning house and the one of the outside view of it, and one where both scenes are played integrally, one after the other.
The latter was released first, but the cross-cutting makes the film way better, it gives the rescue scene a very vivid sense of urgency.
Either way, the short works well as a proto-action film. Good editing, good direction, I particularly liked the way they panned the camera to show us the firemen arriving to the house.

I liked how so many people come out of nowhere at the end to laugh at the poor guy.
Cops were assholes since then, huh.
