This was my third viewing in a day in my effort to view all the Best Picture nominees before the Oscars. Gladly I saved my best film of the day for last. Upon reading its premise, I did not immediately think I would like it. But the second half of the film was hilarious and heartbreaking. Mikey Madison has what it takes to be a star.
For much of the run-time, there is a very good film, keeping the horror to the minimum and veering more on the side of psychological thriller and a commentary on aging in show business. The last act of the film end that in an overly long, quite literally bloated finish.
Films which can be described as having the “art house” style are always interesting to see. This film offers this in abundance, putting together a first-person camera perspective, random images, sounds, and music. The issue is all this distracts from a truly harrowing story which would have been better-served being told in a more straight-forward way.
Thus continues the string of stellar movie musicals. Erivo and Grande are excellent, as well as the supporting cast. Despite the length the pacing was well done but I cannot get past the fact this is only a Part One. The world is well conceived albeit with overuse of CGI.
