I have a huge sweet tooth for these gothic, ethereal “vibes” in cinema, and they were executed with absolute beauty and commitment. This is also one of my all-time favorite plot-lines / stories, so…it had that going for it. I didn’t find Lily’s performance particularly impressive, but some of the others were brilliant. Appreciated the well-timed moments of comic relief. Few too many jump scares for my taste. All in all enjoyed it a great deal, look forward to watching again.

Sleep Has Her House 2017
Utter collapse of time and space, body-boundary blur…apocalyptic solitude, yet you can’t escape the feeling that you’re being watched. Getting lost in the woods never felt so eschatological…

The Substance 2024
About an hour too long, almost insultingly simplistic plot. Could see where it all was leading to from the first three minutes. Neither earnest/emotional nor campy/satirical enough to make any real impact. Two simple elements—disgusting body horror, and a trite commentary on the way society pressures women to be young and beautiful forever—stretched way beyond their reasonable limits. Redeemed only by the striking visual effects, production quality, and the last twenty minutes or so (when it finally leaned into the humor/camp/surrealism).
