  Most of this movie was solid but the ending really ruined it for me. It sort of lived up to every queer coming of age tragedy movie stereotype.

  I didn’t hate it. And I actually thought the performances were quite strong. 

  If this movie had been released in 1995, it would have felt subversive and profound. But there’s been so much closeted teen from religious family comes of age / forbidden love content that it’s hard to do anything earth shattering in the genre. 

  It tries with the horror bit - but there’s actually felt a little unnecessary? The real horror was the closeted pastor doing unsanctioned home-ECT…

  Not enough there for a self standing film. 

  Also something about casting a trans woman as the villain responsible for forced cosmetic surgery on young people feels like it’s designed to feed a right wing dystopian fever dream. 

  It did pique my interest in the books though.
