CRAFT, baby! CRAFT!
It can’t be that hard to make good films out of recycled material, and this one proves it.
This looks amazing, is perfectly paced, and has phenomenal writing - and it absolutely rips.
Sincerely pouring yourself into your art really can make up the difference.
(Loses a half-star for an inconsistent John Mulaney performance. He has his moments but it sometimes misreads the tone.)Translated from by -

don’t ever call me - this was my nicest desecrated building. where will I ever find a derelict shithole next to a train yard ever again?

There's something that happens in the 2nd half of this film that may come as a surprise to some filmgoers.
While the thing in question is objectively awful, it shouldn't surprise you at all - the power differential has been there the whole time. Best actor nom: Keiran Culkin, and I think it’s his to lose.
There’s a moment where Benji turns back into the space with David on the roof and you feel everything this person has ever felt in the last six months. Benji, six months removed from a suicide attempt, has been attempting to reintegrate into society and finds the wrong response to everything he does; waiting for him, and directed at him. How frustrating that must be? Benji tells you in that one small move, and it’s all Keiran. Remarkable.
Edit: Apparently some category fraud is taking place.
