It’s a little too confusing and not immediately satisfying enough to be truly great, but Black Bag looks cool and has a good premise. It’s enjoyable to watch, but I don’t want to read a long essay afterwards to piece everything together. Actually, I kind of like that, but still.

Rewatchables choice, and a good one. Just a really solid political crime thriller with iconic actors and a good plot. It establishes the stakes and the key relationships early, including one of the earlier sex scenes I can remember from any movie, then gets right down to it.

Delightfully 1950s-coded, and it’s not even a 50s movie. Cases in point: a thriving local newspaper! Jimmy Stewart’s goofy-ass voice! A “newspaper man” named Peabody! Doc Willoughby! Inconsistent pacing! John Wayne saying “pilgrim” 50 times! Chivalry! A genuine, non-ironic belief in the sanctity of the United States and its rule of law! Overacting! Enormous steaks for every meal! A bumbling, fat marshal! And of course, an unequivocally evil antagonist, with no exploration of an unnecessary origin story!
