Even streaming, remaking his own classic John Woo is more interesting and original than 90% of action directors working today. So many of the bad reviews seem to have focused on the lack of the original Hong Kong themes and theatrics that they seem to miss that Woo still knows how to place the camera in original and unexpected places, move people through the frame with style, and most importantly he still knows how to make action fun.

Guess I live in a different world than everyone else. To me this was exploitative and soulless, suffering as spectacle with no point other than to revel in depravity.

Maybe we’re all just happy to be watching movies in the theater again, but the love for LP is escaping me. It felt like a long form improv’ed riff on Rushmore, but an hour longer, less funny, and less genuine. The plot is full of Crazy Aces and just because they come from an auteur doesn’t suddenly make them any less random or meaningful.
