    The Substance

    ★★★★★

If you had told me that The Substance was a new film by David Cronenberg, I would have believed you. But no, this is the sophomore film from Coralie Fargeat who gave us the flick ‘Revenge’ back in 2017 which I absolutely loved. And just like Revenge, her second film touches on similar societal themes. The Substance explores societies beauty standards on women, particularly in show business, where in Revenge, it was more about women being an object of men’s…

I was fortunate enough to see this on 70mm IMAX in SF. Luckly I can say I have seen every one of Nolan’s films since The Dark Knight on this screen when he first started using IMAX cameras. Trust me, when they say to see these films on the biggest screen possible, they aren’t kidding. It’s an immersive experience. All of Christopher Nolan’s films are marketed as events and honestly, they are. Oppenheimer is no exception. Though maybe not as…

    Frozen II

    ★★½

Wasn’t a big fan of the first and certainly not of the second. It’s a lot more of the same, just not as interesting or able to capture whatever magic the original managed to conjure up and spark a cultural phenomenon. Yes, it does look n”ice” and some of the musical numbers are decent, but none it reaches the heights of “Let it Go” or even “Do You Want to Build a Snowman” for that matter. Overall, leave it to…

    Frozen

    ★★★

Once again, it’s the same old Disney formula, just with new characters and plot. It’s not bad, and the appeal for kids is undeniable. There’s no doubt the effect it had on pop culture and still somewhat does with some of its more iconic musical numbers with Let It Go as the more iconic and memorable one. Idina’s vocals are great as is from Bell, and Groff. Overall Frozen has great animation, pretty good music. But other than that, it’s average and for some reason, has always left me cold.

    Sing Sing

    ★★★½

I’ll start by saying this film is an acting master class from all involved. But Coleman Domingo, you sir are absolutely one of the best actors working today and totally deserving of his Oscar nomination. But the whole ensemble of mainly formally incarcerated men playing themselves are stellar. As a film, I’m not sure Sing Sing as a whole is as solid as its acting. But there is no doubt this is a tenderly warm film about the power of art that’s authentic, heartfelt and human.

Well that was quite the surprise. Not your average January flick at all. At first glance, Companion is definitely not what the trailer implied, or at least what I took from it. But on second glance and after seeing it, it’s so on the nose. And just for the record, if you haven’t seen the trailers or promo material, especially the final trailer, just avoid all of it. Luckily, I was too oblivious to put the pieces together when I…
