This is a riveting and intense drama with a powerhouse performance by Jonathan Majors. The story throws a lot of complex themes at the audience, which can sometimes feel overwhelming. However, the honest and nuanced writing, direction, and performances outshine the overloaded story. I’ve never seen anything quite like this film. I left the theater feeling not only satisfied but transformed.

This film is a love letter to violent, misogynistic 80’s horror films. It’s marginally less offensive than its predecessor. There’s an intriguing mystery and touching family drama buried beneath all the gore and torture. I wish we got more story and less brutalization of women. (Yes, Art the Clown kills men. This film was tense, heartbreaking, and one of Sarah Paulson’s finest performances. Don’t believe the negative reviews. It is worthy of your time and attention and a master class in dramatic acting.

    What I liked
    - There were a lot of clever, creative visual sequences.
    - I appreciated the use of practical effects over CGI.

    What didn’t work for me
    - The film was bloated with too many storylines. None of them had a satisfying resolution that felt earned.
    - The rules of the Neitherworld are super unclear. This leads to quite a few plot holes.

    Final verdict
This is a sometimes fun but mostly forgettable film that caters to nostalgia. I deducted half a star from my rating because the creative team had 36 years to write a cohesive story.
