I know people say they’re sick of stripped back Shakespeare, but this is one where the choices really land and are only enhanced by the translation to film. The monologues become intimate, paranoid confidings. The sound design is genius. It’s so Scottish and it’s so good.
‘In the name of truth, are you fantastical, or that indeed which outwardly you show?’
I am a big scaredy baby, which probably explains a lot of why I so disliked this film. A little too much reliance on tropey gypsies and sinister shadows for me, but there’s a lot to like if you’re into that sort of thing (my husband who stands by his ‘it’s not even really a scary movie’ ploy, loved the film).
I am always happy to see Willem Dafoe though. Willem Dafoe is always a win.
Also what is that font? It was great.
This movie revealed me to be a complete hypocrite because I unashamedly loved it, despite years of complaining that no movie should be longer than an hour and a half. I loved the colour grading, I loved the whimsy, I loved the performances (Cynthia Erivo and Jonathan Bailey are both luminously talented, and Ariana Grande is all that while also stealing the show with her comic timing), I loved that it was peppered with faithful references and payoff for those…
