Jewish storytelling that more closely resembles You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah than its superior narrative mold, Everything is Illuminated.
A Real Pain fails to go beyond depictions of American Jewishness as past suffering, an anxiety disorder, and judicious taking of prescription medication to deal with whatever other neuroses one may have inherited. The results are characters that do not feel real, or especially Jewish.
